Managing director's message
I am pleased to present Coal & Allied's sustainable development reporting data for 2009.
While 2009 was a challenging year due to uncertain global markets, Coal & Allied has remained committed to our challenge of adhering to long term sustainable principles in the way we mine.
We have much to celebrate. 2009 was a year in which we reduced our greenhouse gas emissions by 60,000 tonnes, with more than 85 per cent of goods and services purchased in New South Wales.
We did not record a critical environment incident or face any fines or prosecutions in 2009.
We realise the work that we do today can have significant contributions to society now, and in the future. We want to create sustainable value from our resources and relationships. At Rio Tinto Coal Australia it is part of our culture to be always asking these questions: Is it the safest way to do something? Is it the most environmentally-friendly way to do something? Is it the healthiest way to do something? Is this the most cost efficient way to do something? Is it the most energy efficient way to do something? Promoting sustainable practice makes good business sense, and ensures we make a valued contribution as a member of the community.
I trust you enjoy reading this report about our key sustainable development results in 2009.
We are always interested in your feedback, and if you have any comments or questions, please contact us.
